In 1936, Julie and Dick Pope opened Cypress Gardens to showcase
exotic and tropical plants in a botanical setting for beautiful belles and
wonderful glass bottomed boat rides. Deemed the first theme park in
Florida, movies and ad campaigns have used the lush gardens as a backdrop to
ensure the natural beauty of the picture or views. Some of the famous
stars that have come to the gardens include; Elvis, Johnny Carson, Betty Davis,
Carol Burnett, Esther Williams and Lloyd Bridges. In 1941, it became the
water ski capitol of the world and started performance skiing. Dick Pope,
Jr. took over the project in 1962 from his dad; who then decided to bring
tourists and developments into the state. In 985, Harcourt, Brace and
Janovich took over control and then sold it to Busch Entertainment in
1989. Then it went into the hands of a private partnership in 1995 but
was forced to close in 2003, after continually losing money blamed on the
terrible events of 9/11.
With great vision, Kent Buescher, owner of Wild
Adventures in Georgia convinced the state of Florida and local officials that
the gardens could be reopened and success achieved. That same year, in
the summer of 2004, three terrible destructive hurricanes came through the
state of Florida and caused the refurbishment of the property to halt.
Kent and his courageous staff persevered and in November of 2004, Cypress
Gardens Adventure Park was opened with wild rides, Splash Island water park,
animals, the famous southern belles, water skiing shows, Jubilee Junction and
an old time village with shops and restaurants serving great southern style
home cooked foods. The next year, over 1.5 million visitors gave the park
one of its highest attendances ever. In 2007, the gardens were acquired
by Land South Adventures, LLC from Mulberry, Florida.
Today the park includes over 40 rides, all-star
concerts, wonderful special events each year and the Splash Island water park
making this a wonderful place to spend the day, especially in the summer times
when the heat index makes your blood almost boil. The Southern Belles
concept was started one year when a frost had damaged some of the vines going
into the park. Julie Pope decided to have one of the girls working there
put on an antebellum dress with hoop skirt and shawl and stand near the
entrance to tell all the visitors coming in that the inside of the gardens had
survived the frost and were in great shape. Ever since that year in 1940,
the Southern Belles have become a mainstay of the Cypress Gardens. Also
during that time, when we were at war, and gas rationing was in progress, Julie
again decided to let people know that the gardens were open in the Florida town
and went to the Orlando Sentinel to advertise. Inadvertently, some water
skiers were shown in the background and when 3 soldiers came to see the water
skiing show, Julie responded enthusiastically, called her son at school to have
him bring home some friends to go water skiing. With her two children and
some school friends, the great and world famous water ski show started and
still goes on at Lake Eloise
